DBS Schmitt GmbH, from Waghäusel-Wiesental, Germany, is using modern technology to help address the shortage of skilled workers in civil engineering. A DINO suction excavator from MTS has been an integral part of the machinery it uses for three years – and is in operation almost every day. Its decision to purchase the excavation was made early on, when it became clear that it was becoming increasingly difficult to find personnel for conventional excavation work.
In the Rheingraben region, you often come across heavy clay soils – nobody wants to use a shovel for hours on end in this day and age,” explains Managing Director Dieter Schmitt.
Precision work under time pressure
A recent project in Kirrlach shows how efficiently the suction excavator is used in everyday projects. In this case, domestic water pipes had to be uncovered to improve the water pressure in a street.
With a hydraulic spade, heavy layers of soil were loosened and then gently vacuumed away – without causing damage to the electricity, glass-fiber or water lines.
Efficiency through modern technology
Another advantage: the hydrostatic travel drive of the DINO VARIO allows the suction excavator to be moved by radio remote control – without interrupting the suction operations. Within two hours, the team was able to dig a 1.5-meter-deep trench, secure it and expose the line. The restoration of the surface also went smoothly, by which time the suction excavator was already in use on the next construction site. “It saves us a lot of time and money – and makes us much more flexible in our day-to-day business," says Schmitt.

Whether it’s for pipe breaks, planned line changes or in sensitive areas with a dense infrastructure: the suction excavator replaces time-consuming manual work, reduces personnel requirements and increases work safety.
